New mattress hurting my back - do I have any rights?

Myself and my partner bought a king-sized mattress back in December and had it delivered on 4th Jan. Two weeks later my lower back and shoulders are so sore where the mattress dips in so much and I don't really know where to go from here. When we saw it in the shop we did lie on it - but it was covered in plastic sheeting so I probably didn't get the full feeling, but it seemed like what we were looking for.

Now I'm terrified that I've spent £300 on a mattress that is no good...do I have any right to request an exchange or is there anything I can do?

I'm afraid not. Unless the product is faulty you have no rights of return and refund (unless you bought it online and DSRs apply). Just because the mattress doesn't suit you doesn't mean its in any way not fit for purpose.

memory foam top by any chance?

If you read a few of the more recent mattress threads on here it seems to be the case that it takes a while to get used to a new bed.

I've had my new mattress for about 6 weeks now and did experience back pain at the start but much better now. Just takes a while to get used to being supported in a different way than your used to, or not being supported at all if your old mattress was old and worn out.

As to your rights I dare say some of the bed guys will be along shortly to answer that.

You generally have to give it three weeks for your body to adjust to the new mattress. If your old mattress was giving out it, you wouldn't have been receiving the correct support which is what your new mattress is giving you. It is essentially correcting your posture so it will ache for a while.

It could be that your new mattress is too soft for you. An exchange is unlikely unless the mattress is faulty unfortunately.

I can't help you much more, I would ask my other half as he works in a bed shop but he is at work, but Tim Deegan (I think thats his name) another MSE member will probably see this thread and will be able to help more than I can.

    Then why post it here?

    How rude.
  • Thanks to the guys who've replied you've been really helpful. Msg to mclmsn if you are able to ask your Hubby, I'd be really interested to know his thoughts - but thanks for your advice too!

You're right, it has nothing to do with this thread. Start your own!

Where did you buy it from, and what was the make and model?

It's too late for DSR's, so the OP's best chance is with either the seller, or if the mattress is faulty.

Well aware of that, I was posting generally. :)
