Cold weather payments backdated?

my partner has been claming esa since end of oct 2010 he has now got to go for his medical on the 26th of jan, will they give us the coldweather payments if his esa carries on after the medical? we have not had any yet as apparently you have to have had the medical, just wondering if they backdate them or not.

only if he is on income related esa and in the support group

ncome-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you are in receipt of Income-related ESA, you will usually receive Cold Weather Payments if you also have any of the following:

• the support or work-related component of ESA
• a severe or enhanced disability premium
• a pensioner premium
• a child who is disabled
• Child Tax Credit that includes a disability or severe disability element
• a child under five living with you
