Hi all
We need a hole dug in our back garden to house a gas tank. Hole to be 4.2m wide x 2.2m long and 1.8m deep. No access issues. No pipework to avoid.
Not very sure what I expected to pay but was a little surprised by a quote of £750 "cash" for work which I expected man and machine to take half a day to achieve.
Either I'm not appreciating the extent of the work or the quote is a little out of kilter. Can anyone in the trade please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

I think the biggest part of the costs are likely to be the "Muck Away" charges. The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0

Sounds a lot but its over 16m^3 of soil before you get air into it so approx 3 skips worth to get shot of = £250 approx just for that giving him £500 for the digging. As the man said its worth getting a few more quotes0 -
Thanks all. Trying to get more quotes. Waiting replies from messages left for contractors. I just thought that so many people read this site, someone might be able to tell me if £750 was about right or not. If it is then I'm afraid OH will have to strip to the waist and get to work. I will help of course in a supervisory and motivational capacity.0

Need to get other quotes for your particular area. I, for one, am always reluctant to pay cash unless I know the workmen very well, BUT especially, if they ask for any funds up front so they can buy/rent materials, in this case, a digger.
If they have 3 people on the job - possible day's wage £70-£100 each.
Cost of mini -digger rental - Around £130/140 w/vat for single day. Slightly more for weekend use.
Skip for dirt and/or truck plus driver - ????
Best to check around. I'm not in the building trade, so hopefully you will get some response from some pros on here.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0 -

Thanks. No intention of paying cash to anyone and always suspicious of companies who quote cash but this is the only figure I have so far.
Hadn't thought that it might take three men. It's only a hole and the digger will do most of the work. Removal of dirt not included as not required. Fast coming to the conclusion that OH will have to work up a sweat himself. In fact the more I think about this option, the more attractive it becomes.0 -
