First Credit Card with bad credit.

Options
Hey posters,
This is my first time posting on this site so hopefully not repeating a post thats been discussed.

Basiclly i'm a stay at home mum, with hardly any credit. I've never had a credit card or anything like that. I have general bills coming out of my account and some have been paid late. I do also have a catalouge which i pay on time everytime. The other thing is my dad who's house it is has quite bad debt regestered to the house.

Anyway my question is there a credit card that would accept me? I tried the barclays first one and i had no luck. The only reason i want one is because i am saving up for a deposit for a house and need to start building my credit up so i can obtain a mortgage.

Any tip or help i would be very greatful to recieve.

You say you are stay at home mum...
So what is your income exactly?

Catalogue account is good start. That will give some credit history.

Debt against house will have no impact on your personal credit report...

Those late bills - are they registered on your credit report?

Did you try the Barclaycard Initial?

There are other cards you could try that fit your criteria like Capital One, Aqua, and Vanquis.
  • My personal income is about £600 a month however my OH brings home £1,800 a month. We're not married though so havnt ever counted his. I applied for the barclays card for beginners and also the Vanquis and was declined for both. The bills are sky, virgin, gas & electric and 2 orange phone bills. All of them have had one or two late payements on them.

    You were declined for Vanquis?

This means you have absolutely terrible credit. It sounds like you either have serious arrears that you are aware of, or there is some very nasty information like CCJs or Defaults on your credit file you weren't aware of.

You need to obtain a copy of your credit files ASAP - #2.00 each from Experian, Equifax, and Call Credit. You need to see what data is there - and if it is correct.

If all the data is correct - at least you will see what needs action taken by you to fix your credit file.

Also ensure you are registered to vote. Not only is it a legal requirement, but also severely affects your credit score not to be.

    Good luck :o

(Bottom line - if you can't get Vanquis - you won't get anything else. They're the laxest credit card company in the land. Something needs fixing by you first)

    Late payments are a problem.
Vanquis didn't take u on-that is not good. Don't try further,2 searches on short time is not good either in ur position.
Your report is now showing probably "desperate" to lenders.

I also second what Izools said..
  • I think first thing to do is not apply for any more credit cards if you have already been turned down for Vanquis and Barclays Initial.

You mention you have bad credit, but you may have been turned down due to inaccuracies on your credit report. Also as you are at your Dad's house, the lender will check your application address versus the electoral roll address on your credit report, if they are different this can lead to delays with your application, potentially further issues. Your credit history is related to you not your Dad, at the address you are living at.

Applying for multiple credit cards over a short space of time looks like identity fraud.

I would check your credit report, from Experian, Equifax and Callcredit, they have a £2 statutory report, but you can call them for advice with the pay monthly services (£7 per month territory), and there is pointers when you login as to areas which may negatively impact your ability to obtain credit. Ensure the information in your credit report is correct.

Also ask the lenders why they turned you down for the products they will tell you, which will give you some clues.

The credit report will show credit accounts and any late payments over the last 1-3 years depending on the credit reference agency.

As you have been turned down can you your other half apply for a credit card and then if you ask they allow you to place another card holder on the account, although this will not develop your credit history.

    Couple of ideas:
    - Do not apply for more credit cards until you have had a look at your credit report/s
    - Ensure whatever debt you do have is paid on time for the next 12 months, set-up direct debits where possible.
    - As mentioned any credit is important, so the store credit impacts your credit history, the orange phone bill payment if this a contract, impacts you credit history, paying these punctually, helps.
    - If you need the credit now, maybe your other half could apply.
    - Once you have developed some solid punctual payments on your credit, over the next 12 months, consider re-applying.

Talk to Capital One, Vanquis, Aqua and ask for their criteria, and also for a quotation search, to give you an indication of wether you would be accepted for the product, without leaving a footprint on your credit file. These have credit builder credit cards.

Once you have on of these, paying the monthly minimum payments is key to improving your credit history.
  • I'm not desperate for credit so i will leave it. I have requested to look at my credit history so will have a look and see what it says. Thank you for all your advice though:)
