Hi all wondering if anyone has any experience or could offer some help regarding the above.
Ill keep this as brief as possible.
winter 2009 wife receives letter regarding a £9800 child benefit debt from the periods of 2003 till 2004..
They started recovering this overpayment or debt or whatever they want to call it at a rate of 25 pound odd in 09 from the carers allowance my wife claims for me. No letter to say what the repayment is for exactly..
A few months later after many phone calls they eventually tell us its due to wifes child benefit claim from periods noted above.. that claim was for her daughter before she stayed with her father full time..
I dont know anyone who gets CB to the tune of nearly 10K in that short space of time..
Fast forward to September last year and and due to moving address the repayments stopped, we got in touch with DWP and found out all of the above and asked for supporting paperwork etc to be sent out again for the 4th time (still not received again) They said they would suspsend recovery while they investigate but they have started taking payments again! no letters no nothing!
What can we do?????? already paid back over 1k.. seems like the father of the child the CB is for is claiming to have have residence for longer than he should of.. either that or god knows..
Thanks

Have you ever asked how this came about? Or did you just accept it and say nothing?Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
50p saver #40 £20 banked
Virtual sealed pot #178 £80.250 -
Is it just overpaid child benefit or child tax credits as well?0

Make sure that there isn't someone claiming fraudulently in your name! A few years ago I had a letter saying that my "Child tax credits" were going to stop and that they were going to claim thousands of pounds back from me. Trouble is, I don't have kids! So I contacted them and it turned out that someone in Wiltshire was claiming all these benefits for four children in my name, using my name and National Insurance number! However they managed it is beyond me, because at the same time I was in full time employment in London paying higher-rate tax and had been doing so for several years.0

I hope you have kept all the correspondence from the DWP about this, taking money like this is appalling.
If you can't get any job go and see your local MP and he will get to the bottom of it quite quickly.
Good luck0 -

Obviously not.... but not much you can do when they "recover" monies supposedly owed without so much as a hi or bye then not much you can do..
We have rang and rang more than several times, they say they will send out paperwork which never materealizes and continually get told its being investigated... person on the other end of the phone actually telling the truth not half truths and a basic understanding of the English language would help!
Wife rang up again today and now its CB plus I/S from sept 04 til sept 06. My wife switched from I/S to JSA in this period and then signed off and was employed til around late 09 when she gave up work to become my full time carer..
Sounds like the childs "father" has told a porky pie or something. As mentioned child benefit EVEN with IS still doesnt add up..
Been told to ring up I/S, no doubt run around will increase even further now...

If I were you I would book an appointment with CAB or Welfare Rights, the situation is ridiculous.
Because your wife claims CA you could always try the number for the Benefits Enquiry Line (see directgov link below), it's really for helping people, who are disabled and their carer's, claim the right benefits but they've helped me with other benefit enquiries in the past when an over payment of tax credits was being recovered even though I'd alresdy paid it back. You may get lucky and speak to someone willing to help.

Good luck with it and let us all know what happens as it could help someone else in the same position.0 -
sorry not any advice but just wanted to say that i hope it gets sorted for you, you would think that they could do thier sums by now especialy with all these " expensive" computers they claim to rely on.0
