part time worker

Hi I'm 24 and work Part Time and live at home with my mum who is on Income Support soon to be on Tax Credits.

Last year a friend in work told me I could get extra help with my monthly income via working tax credits, I rang them and they said because I worked 16 hours a week etc I could get tax credits and I think it was like an extra £40 a week or it could have been a month but because i was only 24 at the time I would have to wait till I was 25.

So this year I'm 25 so I thought great a little bit of extra money would come in handy so I was looking up online and it said even though I will be 25 and on a low income because I have no kids or not work 30 hours or more I could not claim anything.

Has this been changed since the lovely Mr Cameron came to power? or did the lady tell me the wrong information as my sister has a friend in her shop who is also single and lives at home and works 16 hours and she gets/got workign tax credits.

Any help or info woould be great,

Thanks

This has not been changed. I imagine that the lady assumed you had a valid reason for working so few hours?

In that case you need to keep looking - have you considered a second part time job?

Yeah but my boss says as we have to be "flexi time" it could make problems for her, I asked about NHS money off as when I pay my rent and council tax etc i don't have a great deal of money left, I was told I can get some help towards NHS but have to pay so much up front first and it was like £150 per time i went to the dentist before they would pay anything else which is no use, the only thing that might help a bit is if I pay the first £88 on specs they pay the rest.

Just seems stupid that if i'm living at home and working 30 hours I can get tax credits but if I earn less it's a no no.

If you were working thirty hours per week you would probably earn too much to qualify.
