Alternative destination to Tunisia

We were about to book for a four night stay in Tunisia when all went "£$%^£.

So, what alternative short break destinations would any of you reccommend?

I was thinking Barcelona, Budapest (again!:)), Bilbao - can't think of any that would be a bit warmer than here, but please, please can you help - I need a holiday!

We're in London (LHR or LGW) and looking to fly out 16/2 (v early) or 15/2 (after about 4-5pm) and coming back 19/2 (late evening) or if the flight isn't more than 3 or so hours in the mid afternoon.

Will pop Marrakech into expedia now...

it all depends on what you are after really, for a few days id say get a cheap flight and splash out on the hotel.

I love Marrakech ... and am going to Malta next month! Hotels are also super cheap in both locations. ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

Who's to say Morocco (ie Marrakesh) won't suffer civil unrest in the near future? Morocco and Egypt are watching what happens in Tunisia very closely. There's a fine line between normality and unrest in these autocratic countries. The Tunisians have been pushed over the line, Algeria (in between Tunisia and Morocco) has been a dodgy country for years, so Morocco is in a precarious position.
Unless you want your stress-free holiday to turn overnight into a bit of an adventure I'd stay clear of North Africa for a few months.

Its such a shame- Ive never been to morrocco and know id enjoy Marakesh but its all a bit weird at the moment, if tunisians can do this then id say anyof the other countrys may follow suit, tunisians were one of the safest places to go before in north africa

thinking way outside of the box and somewhere similar to Tunisia , have you thought of Syria ?

Damascus is supposed to be friendly, safe , and not on most peoples radar (i.e not full of other tourists ) . Times travel did a whole 2 page spread last Sunday .

you can fly direct with BMI

i would love to go .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

A great way to visit Syria is:
    - Fly EasyJet to Istanbul, and perhaps a couple of nights in one of the world's awesome cities (you could easily stay a fortnight).
    - Overnight sleeper train from Istanbul (Haydarpasa) to Ankara. Couple of days in Ankara. Lovely friendly place full of young people. Visit the Citadel, and Attaturk's Mausoleum (fabulous place, free, great views).
    - Train to Aleppo in Syria (north of Damascus). Plenty of history, culture and fabulous souks.
    - Bus to Damascus.
    - Fly back to UK from Damascus.

Takes a bit of planning, but it's not difficult.
