Does anyone here know about or use encryption software?

At this point I do not like spending extra money on services that I don't need, however, there have been a lot of breakins in our neighborhood lately, and many of the neighbors have had their laptops stolen and their financial/identity info compromised. I keep everything on my PC and do not want to chance it.

Another one for TrueCrypt.

Personally i try to stay clear of any closed source Encryption company that has a feature to recover passwords for encrypted files... sort of defeats the purpose in my books ^_^ lol

True Crypt for me too, If you want to be adventurous use openssl and develop your own routines , but hey if it's round and rolls it's a wheel, someone beat me to that too.

I use truecrypt, had it about 6months with no problems.
Updated mine to version 7 the other day .

I must have been using TrueCrypt pretty extensively for at least 5 years now. I've never lost any data. It's a pretty solid piece of software.

A few years back I did get the occasional BSOD which seemed attributable to TrueCrypt, but that was resolved by ensuring that volumes were formatted as NTFS rather than FAT.

TrueCrypt. used now for about 2.5 years. As already said above I would not use any encryption offering that came tied to a "paid for" service whether that was - in the case of this debate - ZA, Sophos or Microsloth.

WZ 15 actually has 256bit aes.

However well encrypted it is its entirely reliant upon a simple password not the pass-phrase and key protection in TrueCrypt. You could use a randomly generated 63 character jobbie but most people will use one of their favourites. A brute force/dictionary attack using something like fcrack would do for it in a fairly short time.

And Winzip will enable you to encrypt an entire drive and read it on the fly? Could it create - and manage - an entire encrypted operating system or a hidden volume? No thought not.

If you want the fully featured WZ it'll cost you £25 or thereabouts and for that you are getting a programme primarily designed for compression rather than encryption. TrueCrypt on the other had is designed for encryption.

Oh, and its entirely free.

Yes, you might get the WZ free version but why not get the tool for the job rather than trying to us a pair of pliers when you should use a wrench?
