Closing and Re opening Claim?

Hello,
My son was claiming JSA until recently, he closed his claim and is currently doing voluntary work overseas (charity a bit like Raleigh, he has had this sorted out for over a year now!! he has been job hunting since around August time though as he has been unemployed ever since)

So obviously as he is not actively seeking a job/ able to job search or go to interviews /able to sign etc etc etc he closed the claim, but he plans to re open it when he is home in a month or so. Will he pick up from where he left off, ie at X weeks unemployed, he was in a stage of having to go into the job centre every week to see an adviser (for all the good they do) or because he has closed the claim, does he re start from 0 weeks unemployed and goes to sign every 2 weeks? he has been to a workshop/careers adviser meeting, which I think are standard at a certain number of weeks unemployment (8? could be wrong) will he have to go to those again?
Thanks xxxxxx
