Worth switching from Southern to EBICO electric?

Given that Southern Electric (SSE) supply and administer EBICO electric, does anyone have an opinion whether it's worth switching from SSE to EBICO?

SSE are due to raise prices Jan 1st 2007 - does this apply to EBICO too?

My current SSE electric only Economy 7 tariff:-

Night Energy = 3.64p + VAT (Annual Use = 2802 units)
Day Energy = 9.16p + VAT (Annual Use = 2895 units)

Service Charge = 8.56p per day + VAT

Monthly Direct Debit Discount = 3.44CR pounds

EBICO

Night Energy = 3.73p (inc. VAT)
Day Energy = 10.97 (inc. VAT)

Standing Charge = ZERO

Monthly Direct Debit = ZERO

With no standing charge (or DD discount) Ebico should provide a small saving. As to what their prices will be in January, we don't know but a rise would surprize me. January is not far away so I think you should wait and compare prices then.

If you are in the "Southern" distribution area, then Southern distributes your electricity. But I don't think that's what you mean. Are you confusing the distributor and the supplier? The distributor depends on where you live and you have no choice with this. You can chose your supplier and change as you see fit.

SSE is the parent group for several suppliers. Ebico is a supplier.

SSE's prices are going to go up in January. Ebico last updated their prices in August. Ebico may be due to increase their prices, or they may not.

That may or may not help you, I don't know.

  • Anniecave,

Currently, Southern Electric is my supplier and my electric bill comes from them. Given that I live in the East Midlands, the distributor of my electricity (ie responsible for the wires from the sub-station to my home) would be EMEB as was - probably Powergen today.

Scottish & Southern Electric plc are the holding co. for Southern Electric.

As far as I understood EBICO's website, they would be my supplier in the event that I switch from Southern Electric. However, EBICO buy their electricity from Southern Electric and then EBICO bill me for my usage. The administration of my EBICO account would also be handled by Southern Electric. Powergen would still distribute the electricity, but I have no dealings with them.

Southern Electric are due to increase their prices on 1st January: this is still my understanding.

How am I doing so far?

I did the maths and EBICO are currently slightly more expensive than Southern Electric - but if Southern Electric increase prices on Jan 1st this might change - hence my question whether EBICO intend to increase their prices in the new year.

EBICO prices were stable for a year, Gaz, until their price rise in Sept 06, and being a newish supplier, might think to stay prices until they had built up a sustainable business.
An attraction for me is the simplicity of the invoices, and their social stance, tho the latter could change.
  • Ken68,

I rather like the simplicity aspect too - takes a while to work out a Southern Electric bill.

The social stance is interesting, though some might say the shrewd are subsidising the !!!!less?
