Scottish Gas/Electricity guy took meter reading, I'm with British Gas?!

Girlfriend just text to say a guy from Scottish power came to check the meter reading - odd since I'm not even with them! She said he was a very strange guy too, but didn't come inside the house.

Should I be concerned about anything? Is this some sort of scam? Someone eyeing up the house? Just a mixup?

Going to call Scottish Power asap, and British Gas too, but was wondering if this ever happened to anyone else...

I've had my gas and electric via powergen(eon), npower and now BG and none of them have ever read my meter themselves directly.

It is always a third party company that reads the meter (that just happens to be owned by NPower).

Not that unusual really, except for the bit about not coming in.
Unless you are worried about him trying to switch you to another provider and it is some sort of dodgy sales tactic?

Scottish Gas (as per the title) or Scottish Power (as per the content)?

    Scottish Gas is British Gas

It could be that Scottish(British) Gas are using Scottish Power for meter reading purposes.

Edit: As for not going in the house, where is the meter situated? If it's outside, then there is no read to enter the property. If it's inside, then the meter reader didn't read the meter

  • As above comments, there is nothing unusual about that. Just depends who covers what area and so happens to be owned by a Supplier.

Thank you all so much for the replies guys - that's another thing that confused me though, despite having a detached house, my meter is actually next door, but he was asking if he could go through the house and into the back garden? My girlfriend said he was acting weirdly but could just be slight paranoia or being overly cautious - glad to know that Scottish Power is the same as British Gas though :D

SP is not the same as BG, SG is the same company as BG.

If in doubt about a meter reader, or anyone else, ask to see their Id and call the number on their Id card. If still in doubt call the police.
