contents insurance calculation help..

My mum has asked me to get her a quote for contents insurance (hers is up for renewal, and sisnce TSB signed her up to a credit card without her consent, she's not too keen renewing with them!

Im trying to get a like for like quote, so asked for details.

She said that currently her contents are insured for 18k, the year before it was covered for 21k, but it seems TSB reduced that figure to keep the premium cost down when she moved house.

My question is, how do I calculate (apart from itemising and valuing replacements for all her things!!) how much her contents should be covered for? Im wondering if she is currently over insured seeing as TSB could cut the sum assured by 3k without blinking an eye!

She doesnt have a cluttered place, no expensive antiques or jewellery. is there somesort of calculation based on number of bedrooms or similar that would help?

If you are buying a policy that requires a finite figure, then you do need to do an inventory.

Otherwise look for policies that cover you "up to" a big figure (eg £50000) without the need to state the actual figure for cover you need (assuming theur "up to" figure covers you)

More often than not insruances give a standard minimum amount now.

Im with the coop and 3 bed semi, fully comp, accidental damage, items away from the home and legal cover for about £219.

Youre making it harder for yourself bothering with little details.

Have a look at their website = CIS

Oh thats a good point, perhaps the companies themselves do the calculation based on the info I give them about the property, never thought of that:o! Just wanted to get a like for like, and thats whats on the lloyds tsb quote.

Anyway, with trusty MSE im sure i'll be able to get something cheaper for her!

£18k sounds well below what you would normally expect a mature person to have in contents, if she does not insure for the full NEW cost of her contents it can mean all of her claims are reduced by the percentage she is under insured by
