Laptop monitor cutting out

Hi, hope someone can help.
I have a Compaq 908EA Laptop. Recently I have been having problems with the monitor cutting out intermittently. Until I move the lid/screen it works fine but if I adjust it even slightly, it momentarily loses contact but with a bit of fiddling I have a working screen again. (The hinges are quite creaky when opening and shutting the lid.) When the screen goes black I can vaguely see an image depending on how the light catches it – could that means it is a backlight problem?
Would anyone know if the problem is hinge related/backlight/connections or what??
From what I have read on here already, one option may be to get another monitor and connect it to my laptop (cheaper than buying a new laptop, I think!).
I'll not very techie minded so please could you put it in 'idiot-proof' terms.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Deffo sounds like a backlight problem, as you seem to get it to work by fiddling with the case it sounds like it could be just a loose connection, you could try to dismantle the screen cover to check it outWelcome, rogerramjet.

Thanks rogerramjet,
I have had a look at the screen cover but cannot find any easy way to get into it.
I had a look online but could only find instructions on taking a similar laptop to bits to access the screen hinges.
Any ideas?Serendipity13

Hi it maybe is a backlight, but its more likely its the monitor connection on ur laptop to the motherboard that is loose. It happened to mine but i rejigged it back into place. How long have you had the laptop? Take it to a local shop and they should be able to rejig it back into place if its accesssible but if youve got warranty tell them and they'll sort it out.0

Thanks Rumman.
The laptop is almost 5 years old now. What did you do to 'rejig' yours?Serendipity13

Hi, i banged mine into place as to say and it sorted it for a while but i took it to a shop. But i took it to a local computer shop who told me there is a loose connection between the monitor and motherboard on the laptop. I would take it to a local shop and see if they can sort the loose connection out.0
