WTC to be paid into wrong account tomorrow..

Hi,

I've just got off the phone to Working Tax Credits.

They've confirmed they've already sent a payment into an account, where I really didn't want the money going (an old Santander account which is heavily overdrawn).

Apparently the money was sent last Friday 14th Jan, and will hit my account tomorrow, Tues 18th Jan.

I'm so angry, in that it was my own stupid fault for putting down Santander bank details on my WTC form.. So now, a £950 WTC payment is going to be eaten up by o/d and charges, and so I'll be left with only £300.

I asked WTC if there was any way I could reverse the transaction, and request that WTC recall the payment and pay it into a different account.

WTC said not.

I'm now calling them back to ask again, as surely if the money isn't due until tomorrow, they can stop the payment / recall it?

Any confirmation either way would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Sim.

Maybe have a word with the bank and tell them you were relying on the money for other bills etc??

    Thanks Mazcrain.

The bank is Santander though.. I'm so annoyed with myself for messing this up, as I thought I'd put down my other 'basic' Co-op account down on the WTC.

Will give Santander a call but I'm not holding out much hope, as I'm already o/d with them (Unauthorised) by over £600.

However, I needed this money for rent arrears.

    Feeling so low right now.

    Thanks again.

Can you use First Right of Appropriation for the WTC payment? I think this will be a possibility.

    Hi KrissKross,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have no idea what that is (about to have a Google)!

Having spoke to two people at the WTC, they were adamant that they couldn't recall the payments, as they'd already been sent by WTC last Friday, and were heading for my Santader account today (to show on my account tomorrow) :o

Any pointers to any recourse I have would be most appreciated.
  • As a children's centre worker i dealt with the same situation for a client. The Halifax were very reasonable and redirected the CSA payment (in that case) to an alternative account on the condition that she agreed to set up a standing order for an affordable amount to reduce the overdraft, which incidentally was over two thousand pounds. Fingers crossed!

Great to hear your client got sorted.

I called Santander (Collections Dpt), and they were surprisingly very helpful.

Even though it was too late for WTC to recall the payment, I needed to deal with my Santander o/d anyway so it was a good time to call them (I'd already had a letter from Santander's Collections Dpt last week, threatening to stop my card / restrict my account if I didn't bring my account back into credit within 14 days).

Anyway, they agreed to a temporary (for 9 months) free overdraft of £470, which I'll repay at £53 each month (repayments going straight from my balance each month, as the o/d is decreased).

My balance was £620 o/d, but with the overdraft limit now of £470, my 'available balance' is showing as £150 o/d.

However, as the £955 will be going into my account tomorrow, this will then clear the £150 o/d, and combined with the new overdraft, I'll then have £805 available thank goodness, so I can get on top of my bills.

I really didn't hold out much hope for any help from Santander, as they've had so much bad press recently (although, they've on the whole been ok with me).

    This is such a relief.

    Thanks,

    Sim.
