more wireless help

Hi

I am helping a friend set up a wireless network on AOL with netgear DG834G.

He has 3 PC's 1 main and 2 laptops. I set the system up on his main pc in his upstairs bedroom and it was all working fine for a while but the connetion keep dropping out.
I rang tech support at AOL and they said that the router needed to be connected to the main telephone socket.(he has 3 telephone ext and sky tv plugged into the main sockect), I set the system up again downstairs on a laptop connected to the main phone socket and this works fine, the problem is now that the signal to his main PC upstairs is very weak and drops connection.
My question is can I boost the signal from the router or any better ideals?

Thanks in advance

Have you got filters on all phones/sky? When it dropped out before, was that a wireless dropout, or a broadband dropout?

Try changing channels, or see the home made reflector on this link.

When the system was upstairs, it was a broadband drop out, as the i symbol on the router was flashing on and off. When I set it up downstairs on the main line, the symbol light stays on constant.

I Agree with the above post, try changing the Channel (I usually move to 10 if i get problems - especially if you got other wireless items eg. video senders that operate at 2.4ghz - even the microwave can sometimes interfere!!)

You can get a high gain booster aerial that fits on the netgear or other routers - just unscrew the old aerial and put the new one on - these are available from about £12.00 (Available from your local computer store, computer fair or Maplins and perhaps https://www.dabs.co.uk)

Signal strength depends on location and every thick brick wall you hit it will decrease signal strength - up and down isnt too bad as its mostly thorugh wooden floors.

Wireless N or MIMO routers have a lot better range and signal strength as well as better speed and performance, saying that Netgears are very good routers.

Have you tried changing the angle of the aerials? Vertical is not always best and changing the angle to 45 degrees or even horizontal can often make a big improvement between floors.
