I have ordered a set of plugs, so will change them. Will need to investigate replacing the glowplug relay as they are cheap on ebay. Has you had experience in replacing a relay?

all the cells should have water covering the plates inside but shouldn't be filled to the top of the casing.
a short in your glowplug circuit could possibly cause your battery to go pop but i imagine you would have heard that.

it sounds like quite a primitive wiring repair has been done to your glow plug system,nothing wrong with it if its done right but theres every chance they have taken a feed straight from the battery to the glow plugs via the relay.
i doubt its the glow plugs causing this issue. have you had the battery tested yet?

the relay should be a simple straight swap job,if the garage used the existing relay that is. i imagine they will have if they could access the wiring at the back of the relay board. again i have my doubts its this causing the problem.

if its going to be anything related to the glow plug system it will be the wiring the garage done.

your battery voltage is too low to start with.
