What action?

Some of you may seem this as me being unreasonable, anyway I recently sold an item on Ebay. The winner as asked me if he could come and collect the item as he is only half an hour drive away. I declined his request because of not knowing when im free and when im at home. Plus I am not to keen on the idea of doing this, because simply I do not want to. The reason I put my item on Ebay was so I could post in my time with no hassle. Anyway the winner keeps asking if he can come and is stating he don't want to pay the postage costs. However I feel slightly annoyed because why bid and win the item if your not prepared to pay the costs. I don't know if to contact Ebay or what as the winner is not budging and not paying via paypal which I prefer. Any advice? Do I contact Ebay? Do I offer the item to the next highest bidder?

Regards

Open a non-paying bidder dispute. You don't have to let him collect if you didn't say it was an option.

I think that you are perfectly reasonable not wanting some stranger to come round to your home, however, I can see the other person's point about not wanting to pay postage either (everyone wants a bargain!).

Unless the item sold for way more than you were expecting, I'd stick to your guns and post it, but if you do hand it over in person (in a car park or other neutral place) make sure you get a signed receipt from them to prove you've given it to them or you may end up with a paypal charge back!

Oh, whatever you do, if you DO change your mind and let him collect, don't allow him to pay with paypal. Cash only.

I had a buyer ask to collect after winning an item and I just said I would prefer to stick to the terms of the auction and they paid and I posted. Just say that the terms of the auction did not state collection as an option, give them a payment deadline and then start a non payment dispute.

Cheers for your replies. I just sent the winner an email stating the auction did not have the option of collect in person. I told him I didn't want to seem unreasonable but if he didn't pay up in the short term I would have to open an dispute....

As long as he replies he can leave feedback...so await your negative.

Out of interest how much was postage and what weight was the item?
  • depending on what the item was... maybe they want to pick it up in person.. so they can inspect the item, or maybe they are afraid of it being damaged in the post....
as they have had problems like this in the past.

i have had items picked up instead of being posted, and have lost out due to not having that little extra... which added to the postage ..
but i dont mind......as in the end i have sold items to one person... all because of that person picking up their item and then seeing other items from my collections so now they contact me to see if i have a certain vintage item...before they go looking else where..

i feel in the selling game....there should be a little bit of give and take...to build up a good reputation...

but this is my opinion.... and so far..( touch wood) it has totally worked for me....

good luck hope it doesnt get to nasty..feedbaack etc...

The buyer should not of placed a bid if they did not want to pay postage. I think you are been reasonable, I had a thread about people collecting because I feel uncomfortable with the idea. The response was mixed some don't mind some do.

Like the other posts have said, stick to the terms of the auction and if they don't pay open a dispute.

People shouldn't complain about postage. If you don't like it - don't bid on it!

I've bought stuff off ebay that have silly postage costs but I've wanted the items and knew what I was doing so wouldn't have dreamt of moaning or leaving neg.

I can see why the guy asked as for him it would be convenient but he should respect your wishes and carry on with transaction as promised - because that is what bidding is in effect. He shouldn't have made assumptions that it would be ok.
