Where is a good place to get our cat microchipped. The vet seems quite expensive, but what other options are there?

Isn't a vet the only option? I wasn't aware you could get chipping done elsewhere "Your life is what your thoughts make it"

How much is your Vet charging? Around £20 is the standard fees for Vets as you have to remember you're paying for the Vets time as well as the microchipping itself.
I believe the RSPCA offers a microchipping scheme in some regions but I don't know all the details.0 -
Phone around other local vets and ask them for a quote? If you're a wage-earner I doubt you'd qualify for this kind of service from anyone like the PDSA as it's not strictly health-related. To be honest, I think that this would be money well-spent and if I had to, I'd make sacrifices elsewhere to be able to afford it.0

Absolutely. On a similar note, it is worth bearing in mind that some insurers will offer a slight discount on premiums for microchipped pets so the chip can pay for itself.0 -
Try Cats Protection League, RSPCA or ring round the vets. Ours is offering chipping at £9.99 this month.0

Your local council Animal Warden may do chipping so give them a call, and as other have said, try your local rescue groups. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

You think they are expensive - wait till you see the prices of inoculations and worming/flea treatments0 -
A vet is not the only option although it's the only option I've used for my animals. There are some independent people who offer microchipping - like scooby088 has said, grooming parlours sometimes do it.
I know a guy whose business is "pet services" - he does mobile grooming, microchipping and runs a boarding cattery. His microchipping service is, I believe, £10.
I expect you could find out a little more via google, and maybe find a local person trained in chipping...but I would personally pay the fiver extra and have it done by the vet, if I didn't know the independent provider personally. It is after all a big needle and an actual device being implanted permanently into your animal. Placement of the chip isn't a super precise art and it's only tiny, but sterilisation of the equipment is a big deal and you can be completely sure a vet takes that seriously and is fully trained.0 -
All of the equipment is sterile especially the needle as this comes pre packed with the chip already inside, also be aware that the chip can come out if not implanted properly and it has been known for the chip to move around the body too.0
