Tax credits overpayment

can you just phone up tax credits and ask them to stop your working tax creits payments until the renewal forms come through?

I have just been on HMRC's website to do a tax credit check for year 2010-2011 and apparently we should only recieve £700 for that year, yet we have easily been paid twice that! The thing is when we put the claim in last year we gave all the correct details about my partners income and we have had no changes hence why we never thought much about it until now. I know they go by the year befores earnings but that was mostly jobseekers as my parnter was made redundant in 2009 so i cant see that they worked our payments out based on that income.

I dont want to carry on recieving it and have to pay even more back. Bloomin stupid system this is!

Tax credits get calculated from the year before payments. You can't be recieving too much as you gave them the correct details? It is only when you get your renewal in april that you will be calculated on last years earnings....so surely its right? Tax credits you get at the moment will be based on 2009/2010 earnings and in april will be based on 2010/2011....
  • i think i will just stop them incase, we can get by without them just about.

It might be worth explaining to them why you are confused and they will no doubt tell you that you are not being paid for 2010/2011 yet

It will be based on 09/10 income and is right so long as your income is not 25K more this tax year (10/11). From April your award will be based on 10/11 income and be changed accordingly - be sure to phone when you have your P60 figures to ensure they have the right figures to calculate it. Why stop it when it is something you are entitled to? If you can get by without it just put it into a savings account for a rainy day. Like the previous poster said if you give them a ring they will put your mind at rest.

  • There is another benefits calculator called Entitledto, this should give you a better indication of what you were entitled to for the overall year as HMRC calculator will only go from todays date as if you were making a fresh claim, as Kerry13238 mentioned above.
  • i used hmrc's calculator and i just typed in 2009/2010 income instead to give me a rough idea and its saying we should get £800, confused because the rate we are being paid means we would of had £2800 come April.

That £800 is from today until beginning of April - as a previous poster has said try https://www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx and input 09/10 income as this will give the yearly figures for 10/11 tax credits.
