How bad is megabus?

You'd pay £40 to avoid 2x4 hour journeys and 2x2 hour journeys, ie 12 hours on the bus?

How long would the train journeys be?

Obviously megabus is cheaper, but the question is: Is the experience so bad it's worth paying £40 extra for a more comfortable journey & to avoid the traumatic experiences I have been reading about. Or is all that just hearsay and the service is actually okay?

I've read about buses not turning up, 10p/min for awful customer service, people being charged twice for 1 journey, no ventilation, being told their tickets are not valid & not let on the bus, the "ryanair" of the roads, transported like cattle..... etc..... If it's really that bad then it's not worth it. But is it really that bad?

Well you get similar reports on train travel.......

Whether it's worth paying the extra depends on your own personal value system, how much you value comfort against time. No one else can really answer for you. And even if it's a bad experience 'traumatic' is over egging it.

I'd regard it as worth paying the extra for a long journey - say Scotland from London, but not for short ones like London Birmingham.

Also worth looking at National Express coaches - they are reputably marginally better than Megabus and not always more expensive.

I used them to get from London to Aberdeen when my flights were cancelled. Will never do that again. Cramped, horrible and full of drunken Scots leaving Victoria at midnight. That said, it got me there.
I would use them for shorter journeys fine. The buses are comfortable enough and I haven't been on one that's been late yet. Depends on your situation but if they are shorter journeys then yes, Megabus should be fine.

Are you saying that for the price of your bus ticket you also get a party thrown in free of charge

Don't forget the related article at the bottom of that story.

They suspended the driver for that stunt. Can't find out what the result of the company's investigation was though.
  • I travel with Megabus every couple of weeks between Manchester and Sunderland and have never had any problems.

Also i find there drivers better then National express drivers maybe its just the Manchester drivers that are ok but never had any problems with them at least they smile and talk to there passengers more then can be said for National express drivers.
