Wonga's horrific Customer Services!

I applied for a short term loan from Wonga and successfully got accepted. I was waiting for my funds to come through, nothing came, so almost a week later, i thought I would call to see what the problem was, Eventually, having called the office several times, i found out that i had miss typed the last digit of my sort code of where the funds were due to be credited by mistake which can easily happen, I was told that there is nothing wonga can do and that its my fault and that I am liable to pay back the funds even though I havent got them, the operator was not helpful at all. I rang again and spoke to someone who assured me that they would send an email to head office and that it would be sorted, they said that I would receive a call, which never came! I have had to keep calling at my expense and wait for someone to pick up. Eventually someone picks up, i ask to speak to a manager, I get put through to a team leader, who promises me that he will email head office and that head office will contact me. That didnt happen. I have sent several emails to Wonga. Eventually days later I get an email asking for info that I have already emailed and then I get another email saying that they cant help me. I rang head office and supposedly spoke to the highest person who had an attitude problem and was refusing point blank to help me.This pathetic behaviour has cost me financially big time and put me in a worse financial situation then what I started. WHY IS WONGAS CUSTOMER SERVICES SOOO DISGUSTING AND UNHUMANE??????? I am soo stressed out with this eally situation and have never come across a company that has such disgraceful customer services!!! Its shocking!!!

  • Have you contacted your bank to see if they can retrieve the money from whevever is was mistakenly transferred? I'm not sure what Wonga are expected to do - it's not their fault they've not had their money and they can't do anything to sort your mistake (except perhaps give you more time to pay)

As you mis-typed the account number for the funds to be transferred to, then sadly, there isn't a lot that can be done. Wonga have transferred the money and it's up to the recipient (and maybe their bank) to give that money back - something which they're not necessarily obliged to do.

So, meanwhile, Wonga have loaned you the money - that fact you haven't received it is unimportant as far as they are concerned as the money has still left their account, on loan to you and you are still due to repay that money in accordance with their agreement.

Unfortunately, unless that money is returned by the recipient or the receiving bank (which can happen if the account number you specified is invalid - but will take some time) you are liable for paying it back. Even if the money is returned, you will still be charged interest on it.

You're just going to have to swallow the cost of this mistake - look on it as a lesson learnt!

Wonga will want their money back and my advice is to pay it until you can sort this debacle out.

I think (but maybe wrong) that if you recieve money that is not yours then you ARE obliged to pay it back, to keep it would be theft (or maybe fraud). In fact, I am sure that I have read this on this forum.

OP, I would contact the bank where the money went and give them all the info you have.

Something similar happened to us once, when my DH changed jobs and missed a couple of numbers off the bank acc number. It went into a holding account at the bank and we eventualy got the money about 6 weeks later. All our fault tho, nothing to do with the bank or the compnay paying the money.

I don't believe that's the case - WONGA can reverse the payment (it takes a little work to call their bank and may add some fees) and the recipient's bank will just reverse the credit. The recipient has no right to the money, and if the reversal leaves them overdrawn, they shouldn't have spent it.

The OP does still need to get past WONGA's impenetrable customer service, sure, but the situation isn't hopeless (just a pain in the backside).

How it is "bad customer service" that they've paid funds to the destination that you gave them?

That aside, if the sort code and account don't exist then the funds should be bounced back. If they do exist, then the funds have to be claimed from the receiver, which will be harder and relies on their cooperation.

Looks like I was wrong - apologies for that - I just didn't think that money could be removed from someone's account without their permission. I've read about banks contacting recipients of money that doesn't belong to them, requesting their permission to refund the money.
