Considering selling my house privately

  • I sold my first flat privately, only because it was on a Main Road, so was great for people noticing the signs on the windows! I just stuck up massive signs with my mobile number on it and waited for viewings. Also helped scale down the nosey neighbours coming to view it with the estate agents :) I had no problems at all, and got the price I was looking for, I used a solicitor for the transfer of deeds and completion of sale, other than that negotiating was fine, although the buyer used a solicitor to negotiate with me.

I sold my 2nd home through an estate agent, and didn't really find any benefit's other than they put pictures of my house in their window. It all boils down to the location your in I think, as no one would see your signs if you were in an out of the way area. I would have no problems buying from a private seller (once I have a decent deposit saved!!!)

If your in an area where plenty of people would see your signs, I'd give it a go, it can't hurt, then if you've had no response after a few weeks maybe re-think. Good luck!

I've voted no in the poll, not because I have any objection to buying privately but simply because I'm never going to know that it is up for sale. When I first started house-hunting I searched high and low for sources of "properties for sale" lists but it quickly became apparent that everything I found I'd already seen on Rightmove. Now that is the only place I bother looking.
  • We sold our first ever house privately by sticking a homemade board in the garden with an asking price of he highest of the estate agents quotes and sold it within a week. It was the height of the boom and we knew we'd have no problem as people constantly drove around our area to look for houses.
This time around I'm in a similar predicament to you. I'm in two minds between an online estate agent and a traditional one. Yes the online ones are cheaper but I'm concerned about, firstly, the lack of presence where we are here 'up north' as there are two maybe three in the county being sold per online EA but secondly the upfront fee and possible lack of incentive to sell once that's received. I think it's a tough call really but I'm slightly favouring the local agents, not completely sure why!
