Direct debits to pay barclaycard.

Does anyone know how long it takes for a direct debit to be set up with barclaycard. I set one up for a minimum payment 28th december. I checked with the bank it was coming from who told me the direct debit was successfully set up on the 31st of Dec. My minimum payment didnt go out on the 7th of Jan which means £12 fine and bad credit and harrassment from barclaycard collection who i thought were scam people as i didnt know there was a problem with my barclaycard. Payed off total balance today, rang barclaycard to find out why direct debit didnt go through they were very rude said direct debit still isnt set up and took 4 people almost an hour to tell me i was speaking to collections and couldnt speak to anyone else untill the payment i made has cleared. All they would say is it takes 4-6 weeks to set up a direct debit. 'since when does it take more than 10 days' plus my bank said it was set up on the 31st. Am i being stupid?

you need to wait until the statement explicitly says that the payment will be taken by direct debit; until then you must pay by other means

There is a difference between 'setting up' a direct debit and taking the first payment.

You need to see 'your payment will be taken by direct debit' on your statement before relying on it.
