Help - Word stops responding when I try to launch a new Word Document from e-mail

HI,
HopefuIly I will be able to explain this properly.
When I am working in Word I sometimes need to open another word document or insert a word document into the one I am working on.
This is fine, however if I get distracted for any reason and switch to my e-mails, desktop, or whatever and try to launch a word file from there Word stops responding if the "Open File" dialogue box is still open.
I have tried this on another computer and that gives a warning about a dialogue box being open and doesn't open the file.
However my PC does not give this warning and must be attempting to open it which results in word crashing. The filename on the Taskbars start flashing and I can't do anything with it. The only way I can get rid of it is by going into Task Manager and shutting Word down from there meaning I lose anything I have been working on in the original Word document.
I hope that makes sense and someone can help me.

Are you sure there are no 'hidden' message boxes under other windows? Try using Alt-tab to cycle through the processes to bring it to the front.0

I have tried that there are definately no boxes anywhere else.
This one has got me stumped and although it doesn't happen often it is annoying if I had typed stuff and not quite got round to saving it yet and some of it is lost because the autosave version isn't recent enough0
