Windows cannot check for security updates.

Since I installed Microsoft Security Centre back on the 14th December, my PC has not been well.
Firstly, I had incidents with Trojans and other Malware, which some of you helped me sort out (I installed Malwarebytes). My PC is no longer crashing.
I now have a red shield on the bottom toolbar which is, I hope, the MS Firewall/defender programme. I also have a castle, with a black on orange exclamation mark against it, which says it is Windows Defender. I have two light blue icons, which say "Windows can't check for updates".
When I try to check for updates (none since 14/12/10), I get a box with an error code - 0X80072EFD.
I am very confused by this, and at the moment do not trust any of these "security" programmes (are they genuine?), because all of these problems have started since downloading Microsoft Security Centre.
I am running Vista, and these are the first problems I have had in three years of use.

Go to Windows Update directly...are you able to download updates that way?0

When I try to go to the site, it appears, and then suddenly a message comes on to the screen, saying that the "Connection was reset" and "server is unable to connect with the site".
Is something in my PC stopping this?0 -
Kill all antivirus programs....then re-run (must be IE not FireFox or Chrome)0

I cannot access IE (I could yesterday). I have run Malwarebytes and it did not detect anything. I can get into Firefox OK, and it is still allowing me to browse at normal speed. I have noticed over the past few weeks, that every time I do a Google search and click on a result, I get thrown to some other site.0

Backup everything important (file wise) and reinstall a fresh Windows....you'll save more time in the long run this way0

If you right click the taskbar icon and open network and sharing, click manage network connections, right click the connection, click properties, click Inernet Protocol 4, click properties, check there are no entries on any of the tabs, remove any options, reboot the PC. Maybe worth checking Internet protocol 6 as well.

When you ran Malwarebytes did you update it first before running a full scan or are you having problems updating Malwarebytes as well?0 -

Malwarebytes is updating OK, and it is not finding anything when it scans.
I still cannot connect using IE. I have tried to load the updates version of IE (Version beta9) via Firefox, but it will not load, because it cannot get the latest updates.0 -

Try Windows Update
There are no entries on 4 or 6.0
