Hi,
I have recently just been connected to broadband with talktalk, I have a package that says i can get up to 24 meg. I know about distance from exchange but the fastest i can get is 0.7meg, i rang them and they said yes thats about right. i think its not on, how can they say upto 24 meg when i don't even get a meg if i knew that i would have gone with some 1 else but now im stuck with a 18month contract.

You canna change the laws of physics captain!
Log on to your router and post its line statistics.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php should help.
It may be that a few tweaks could improve you speed all be it slightly.
You alternatives would be cable, mobile, waiting for FTTC or moving closer to the telephone exchange. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

thats the problem though, they say up to 24 so it could be anything from 0 to 24, it is a bit naughty its done like this but until its changed not much you can do apart from do as penrhyn says or move down a package so your not paying extra money you shouldnt be paying(actually it seems you can leave according to what prev poster says)
or you move to someone like cable (if you ar ein a cable area)0 -
Did you or have you checked to see what speeds you can realistically expect to get at your local exchange?0
-
Try the BT checker to get an idea of what speed you should expect.0

The graph in the link below seems generally accepted as the best pictorial estimate as to what sort of speed you are likely to get from your broadband depending on how far away you live from your local exchange as the cable runs (not as the crow flies) and is often quoted

TalkTalk Plus
i have signed up for this service and it goes live mid week the line check which was carried out and is on the order says Your broadband speed is estimated as 14.8Meg ,my current download speed via Virginmedia is coming in as below

Carry out a speed test using TalkTalk http://help.talktalk.co.uk/app/answers/detail/a_id/1640/kw/check%20speed/r_id/113152
also carry out using www.speedtest.net
What figures are you obtaining ?
If i don,t get anywhere near the figures i have been quoted I'll invoke the get out clause.
Speed test like this are unreliable.
I previously suggested that the OP obtain their router statistics, that provides definitive data regarding the link between the subscriber and the exchange. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I'm not being funny, but I'm getting a bit tired of people on forums bleating about bb speed when they don't have a clue how it works
Without your line stats, it's impossible to tell if what you're currently getting is about right or there may be a problem. To the OP and malamute - as penrhyn has stated, POST YOUR LINE STATS !!!
Also, to the OP, TT and Sky have introduced Dynamic Line Management systems on their LLU lines, so if you may still be in an initial line training period, where the systems analyse how your line performs before settling to steady-state. Speeds will always fluctuate during this period....
let's use some common sense please - supply the correct info and maybe we can help
p.s. sorry for the rant, but I often find people bleating about their bb speed are doing so without cause, as when they finally post their line stats, they are very often getting what the line will support.
check here:- http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
this, along with the internode graph linked to above, will give you the best estimate of what your line can achieve.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
