Possible break problems

I've got a 5 year old Skoda Octavia and I'm starting to think the breaks aren't working as well as they might. When I break and put my clutch in it feels sort of juddery, almost as if it's going to stall but it doesn't.

I'd like to take it to a garage to get them to look at it but I'm a bit wary of taking it to Kwick Fit as my brother had problems with them telling him his car needed more work doing on it than the dealership who had just MoT'd it did.

I live in the Bolton area and have taken cars to ATS (or something similar) before but sadly they're no longer there. Does anyone know of a decent garage in the Bolton area? Also does anyone know if it is likely to be the breaks or something else?

Thanks for any help.

Don't know a specific garage in the area, but a local independent (Bosch / Unipart approved).
Government backed Motor Codes site is also a good one - it has a garage finder on it.

Kwikfit are doing a free break check at the moment, they will measure wear etc. and give a report all for free!

That will be just before they tell you that your car is dangerous and needs £x amount spending on it to make it safe. :D

Then they'll say it needs new shock absorbers, tyres, exhausts, brake discs and to drive it any further would be dangerous. Whereas the independant garage around the corner will tell you exactly what if anything the problem really is.

Ask a few taxi drivers where they go.
