A bit of a story but I do need Help

I took a loan a number of years ago. I called Intelligent Finance and gave my 10 digit security number, 2 digits from my pin and all my additional DPA. I applied for a loan which was accepted. Someone called me a week later asking me if I took a loan. As I did not trust the caller I said no and wasn't willing to discuss it any further. She said no matter what we will take it from your bank account. A few years later I called to obtain a settlement figure. I passed all the DPA above again, and was advised I would be transferred. When I got through to the other agent she presented herself as Halifax. She asked me all my DPA again, then asked how much was the loan? duration of the loan? and payment of the loan?. I have never recieved any paper work from the loan and cannot remember the exavt duration or even the total amount. I thought it was 8500 over 72months however as I have no paperwork I cannot remember. The woman from the Halifax advised me she could not discuss it with me as I had failed security by not answering the 3 additional questions. I have tried to get a settlement figure for past 4 years and I am now in 6th year of my loan. I cannot carry on like this as I took as I really need to pay it off. I feel it is almost entrapment. I have escalated several times and IF.com will not discuss this with me. They just transfer me to Halifax in Warrington who treat me appallingly. They advise me I can call as many times as I want but until I guess the amount they cannot discuss it with me. I have explained to IF.com that I passed DPA to get the loan and had no idea that my loan was going to be with Halifax. I know Halifax own IF.com however I cannot even view the loan on my online banking even though previous loan I could. With never recieving any paperwork or annual statements even though I am still at same address this is very frustrating. I want to pay the loan off but cannot get a settlement figure. I don't understand the legalities of this and the fact I never applied for a loan from Halifax and was never advised this. Can anyone suggest what I can do. I have written to the FSA and Ombudsman and heard nothing back I have complained several times to IF.com officially although again they forward it on to Halifax. This has been at least 4 years I am trapped in a loan I need to pay off. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

you talk a lot about phoning, have you written asking the same questions?

Ultimately if you stop paying they will get in touch, but it may hurt your credit rating.

Have you tried visiting a branch of Halifax with some ID so you can prove to them who you are and ask them if they can call the relevant department for you?

Stop paying? they would write/email you asking to contact them to discuss?
can you not confirm the amount of monthly repaymrnt, date, and bank account payment taken from, along with name, Address dob etc?
have you written to providing info requesting settlement providing details of above?
Do you have access to the bank statement where you had the money paid? you can request this from the bank if you know the dat eof the payment.

Not a good idea if you want to protect a credit rating. In fact I cannot think of a more stupid suggestion for resolving this than wilfully missing a payment.

Complaining is the way forwards here.

The IF web site tells you how to do this. By raising it as a complaint you put the onus on IF to find a way of communicating with you that is acceptable and looks to resolve the problem.

Personally I'd put it in writing.

    Phone Us

Our Contact Centre staff are available to speak to you seven days a week on 0845 609 4343. Most customers' concerns can be resolved by our Contact Centre staff, who will do all they can to help. If they are unable to do so the complaint will be passed to a specialist team for investigation.

    .

Ridiculous idea, go to the back of the room Lawrie

They will write of course, but they will also be reporting to the CR agencies and destroy your credit rating. You will than have another Mother of all battles to get that corrected.

If it turns out you have overpaid, then claim it back but for the love of all which is Holy, DO NOT STOP PAYMENTS

I assume that your are paying this loan regularly through your bank. If you look at your online statement or your list of direct debits/standing orders there will be a payment reference- this will probably be your account number for the loan. Use this to write a letter to the finance company and ask them to send you a statement as you are still at the same address they may be able to help you out.

write to them, recorded delivery (write to every one of their depts if need be), any one who suggests to stop paying, just ignore. that's a bad idea
  • I used to work in that department.

It totally depends who you speak to over the phone. Was it settlements you tried? You could try normal customer services? You should be able to say you don't know those details but can confirm the sort code and account number the payment is taken from, the monthly payment and the direct debit date.

Do you by any chance have your bank statement from when you took out the loan? That would show you how much you borrowed.

If you do get through security ask for copy documents to be sent. Then you will have all the information.

Maybe go to a Halifax branch with ID and they should ring through for you.
  • Also the IF loan you have is 100% Halifax, if as you said it's 10 digit reference number. I don't even think IF can view it. So writing to them won't help at all.

Regardless of where the back office administration takes place, the address provided above is exactly the right place to send a written complaint communication to.
