How would you use an egg poacher?

So I received an egg poacher for Secret Santa (as below)
IndividualEggPoacher?$lg$

The idea is that the handle sits on the side of the pan so you don't have to do much

I tried making poached eggs with it a few days ago. Boiled the water in a pan, cracked an egg in the poacher and then popped it in the water and the egg white started floating off.

I tried with less water but then the top didn't cook properly.

Anyone know how to use one of these? I can't make poached eggs normally (not if you want your poached egg whites with your yolks :rotfl:)

  • The big thing with poached eggs is freshness. I can tell the difference between todays eggs, and eggs just a couple of days old by the way they react when dropped in simmering water. I used to struggle sometimes to keep the whites together until we got our own hens. I'm not suggesting you do the same- but try & source some eggs from somewhere else, and see if it makes a difference.

you said with less water the top doesn't cook - if you put a lid on wouldn't the steam cook the top? I'm a huge fan of the Lakeland poachpods as well - with the lid on I do get a bit of water on the top, but it doesn't mix in with the egg so I just tip it off when I take it out.

ohhhhh what a device. Have you tried putting a dash of vinegar in the water? that may not help!

I could always perfectly poach eggs until the last time i tried, it was a total disaster! Yeuck.

Like OP I have never managed good poached eggs, and day fresh eggs are not an option around here

I eventually bought a egg poaching pan from Wilkinson's, only a cheapo, £5ish, know what, it works

Has 4 egg sized things that fit in a carrier over hot water, blob of butter in the cup, egg into cup, lid on & bingo, 5 minutes later a nice and intact poached egg

When the poacher eventually bites the dust I will get a better quality one now I know the system works

Misskool, I'msure you could master properly poached eggs, a good like you who makes the best jelly I've ever tasted!

If my eggs are not v.fresh...and lets face it, I'm usually swimming in eggs, I just stir the water n the pot furiously and plop the egg,(from a cup so there is no time wasted opening the egg) in to the ''whirlpool''. Its not as neat as one of those baked style poached eggs but I love the whispy bits.

I put a splosh of white vinegar in the water and don't have it boiling too furiously :)

I haven't eaten a poached egg since I left the nasty, rattly, annoying egg poacher behind with ex-DH (they deserved each other :o).

    it looked like this:

and was a real pain to clean. I am quite taken with the Lakeland pods though, maybe I'll buy one to try!

OP, I'd use your secret Santa gift as an egg boiler as the egg would stay in one place and not whiz round the pan getting cracked & sneaking out of the shell.

Must admit when I looked at it I thought it was an egg boiler and not a poacher
