Please can you help? I am a UK citizen but resident in Canada. I intend to buy a return flight ticket from a British company paying in GBP using my British credit card. Can I claim back the VAT. If I pay the same way for car hire, can I claim back the VAT on that too?

As far as I'm aware, you can't claim back the VAT on flight tickets for the simple reason there is no VAT charged on scheduled flights - "Zero-rating applies to all scheduled flights". And as far I'm aware you can't claim back the VAT on the car hire because well, everyone has to pay the tax inclusive price on everything they buy, and there is no mechanism for refunding it to tourists unless they physically export what they've bought back home.

I don't think there's an EU equivalent of the Canadian GST rebate scheme for visitors.

  • hi
i am an indian resident and in uk for some time(not a businessman) I bought a tv from currys of 599 gbp. vat is 20% approx 120 gbp. Now I want to carry the tv to india as its latest model and not available there. i Have 2 issues after reading this Vat claim thread:
    1. i need original receipt to show to india custom as they will charge duty on total cost, so can not submit original here in airport.

2.I will check-in the TV in starting point(boarding pass)itself than how Ill show goods to custom office in UK office who will be there at end point.
    thx in advance

And whats the excess baggage charge for a TV ?

Is it likely to make it undamaged?

How will you bring it back for repair?

  • I think some confusion arose because Dixons at airports and the Channel Tunnel called itself "Dixons Tax Free." VAT was still chargeable to EU travellers, but Dixons gave a discount equivalent to the VAT. They've changed the name now, presumably because it was misleading.

They were overpriced anyway compared to online, so that's where they made the profit. It was only worth it for goods where the manufacturer fixes the price, e.g. Apple.
