My nephew is has been visiting and is going back to Brazil in a couple of months and wants to buy a notebook before he returns, his Mum did the same a couple of years back but did it in PC World where she got to fill out all the forms, how would he go around doing it if buying from Dell.co.uk, i've looked on the site and tried calling but keep getting cut off.

To get the VAT back you have to buy it from a retailer who participates in the VAT refunds for tourists scheme.

If you can't find a reference to it on Dell's on line site then they probably don't participate.

Many thanks confirmed with Customs that online does not count.
  • I Am a retail and vat registered, if i buy goods new to sell abroad, can i claim the VAT back on the airport as i will be selling them there? Your help is much appriciated.
  • If I were to buy a IPAD though a business could I claim back VAT which is going to be about £95????
  • If it is used for business purposes and if you are registered for VAT then, yes, it can be reclaimed.
If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it

Only for non-EU citizens. Refunds made by the retailer only and only when they have a Customs stamped authority of proof that the goods and the person have left the UK.

Retailer must subscribe the the refund scheme (usually all those at the airports), some non-airport retailers may also use the scheme such as Harrods who have a lot of non-EU customers come visit them.

Technically, nothing to stop you flying in from non-EU country, buying laptop from airport retailer, completing the forms and flying back to non-EU country with a VAT refund.....but non-EU country may assess for tax and duty when re-entering the country (or take your chances of declaring no goods being imported at the airport upon arrival) and factor in the cost of the flight and it becomes less commercially viable. HMRC do have records of who leaves/enters the country and so repeated trips to 'buy' goods will eventually be picked up and they'll tip off the non-Eu countries authorities who'll pick up the person at their end.

Read the post above yours and click the link.
  • Please can you help? I am a UK citizen but resident in Canada. I intend to buy a return flight ticket from a British company paying in GBP using my British credit card. Can I claim back the VAT. If I pay the same way for car hire, can I claim back the VAT on that too?
