Laptop has given up the ghost - need replacement

Can anyone help me - my daughters laptop has given up the ghost -please help me find her a replacement. She is a 2nd year business student as Glasgow uni and needs this urgently!!

Make and model of lappie.
What is the problem? i.e. how did it manifest itself? Does it boot? If not, what point does it get to? Any strange noises? Any new software added recently?
And it may help to start a new thread for this. Firefox 2 help doesn't begin to describe the problem.
