Thank you all for your help and thoughts.
Just thought I would give you some positive feedback.
Hastings Direct Customer Service department called me when I returned from my trip..... They said they would waiver the £35.00 charge and apologised about how I was treated.
That has restored my faith in human nature - it is nice to know that common sense prevailed here....
