Hi everyone,
Two days ago I received a letter from Vanquis Bank welcoming me to my new credit card which was attached to the letter and telling me all I had to do was telephone them to activate the card. It had a credit limit of £500. I have never applied for a card from Vanquis.
On the same day I had a letter from CCP Insurance thanking me for taking out an identity fraud policy and telling me that they would be charging me £6.00 per month starting on 13th Jan 2011. Curiously, the last 4 digits on the card they quoted matched that of the Vanquis card.
I checked with Experian and sure enough a search had been carried out by Vanquis. I spoke to CCP and found out that they are related to Vanquis and that the insurance policy had been automatically been generated. I told them to cancel it immediately which they agreed to do.
When I challenged Vanquis on the card they sent me, they said it must be someone trying to steal my identity and that I should speak to the Police and get a crime number. Which I have now done.
Has anyone had a similar experience, because to me it smacks of 'sharp practice' and I'm not so sure this is fraud. Lots of people would probably love to get a card like this in the post, especially just after Xmas!!

One trick I hear more and more of recently is fraudsters using sites like Quidco to apply for or buy things in other peoples names to get the cashback. Vanquis are currently giving £25 cashback for an accepted application. Perhaps someone has used your details for this.0

Yes they do but the fraudster could put in any landline, and as long as they answer that number masquerading as the victim the application goes through.
They could use a VOIP number from the likes of Sipgate to hide their true identity.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48
