does anyone have any idea whether it is a big problem, and how much i should be expecting to pay for repair?
many thanks

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I'd be checking for a reset button before I did anything else, like thinking about replacing it. There may be a red(?) button somewhere obscure which trips out if it gets too hot. Our old one used to do this very occasionally and once reset would work happily for months.A house isn't a home without a cat.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

I think you are still entitled to the repairs for free.Speak to where you bought this from.Don't just ring Hotpoint as they will fob you off and not charge you for the parts but the labour will be about £80ph.
Speak to your local Trading Standards officer before you approach the vendor.

Do you have any electrician friends?
If its not the thermal trip thats gone, its probably the heating element. And depending on where its failed (if its just at the point where the element wire connects to the terminal block) you can reconnect the element to the terminal and its back working again - I've done that to one machine which has gone on another 6 years to date with no problems.
Best not to do it yourself tho :eek:0 -
thanks for the replies everyone. i have just found this page with a step by stepguide to resetting it.

I would say the thermostats are the favourite. Either faulty or burnt connections. I think kits can be purchased consisting of both stats.0

The element went on our hotpoint after about 2 years. It's fairly easy to replace if you happy with a screwdriver and a few electrical connections.
The element for our machine cost about £40 from the local spares place, although they needed the serial number to decide if our machine had the £24 element or the £40 element (typical it was the £40 one)0 -
aghh - update!
after an evening of taking it to bits, and checking various parts were working (dont ask me how- my pa had a thingy which told him which bits worked when he put this wire here, and that wire there...... anyway) it seems its not the stats after all, but a relay on the circuit board under the front panel.
I have no idea how good or bad that is, as Dad's kind of taken over, and is ringing a pal who used to work for hotpoint or something, tomorrow to see what to do next.I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
