Standby and Hibernation not working

I am unable to get my computer to go into standby or hibernation in windows XP. When it happened previously I was able to get it working by using the sfc /scannow facility. When using scannow it asked for the windows installation disc because files were missing from the dllcache, usually with this method I got it to work again but now whatever I do dos'nt work. I have tried going into safe mode and also system restore but it still will not go into standby or hibernation. The power options are set correctly so it's not that, any suggestions please.
