Council Tax help...i'm clueless - two different questions

Options
Long Story Short

Mum owns house we live in, we pay the council tax.
We own property mum lives in (alone) she pays council tax.

We're moving out of Mums place and buying another property, which will hopefully be our home for the next ten years or so.

In the meantime, Mum will come out to her home every other weekend to stay and potter about.

So, at some point (when we exchange contracts on new house?) i will stop paying council tax on Mums and start paying on new home. (which will be empty for about two months whilst renovations are taking place.)

Mum will have to take over responsibility for the council tax on her house, (the one she will be visiting) Whilst still paying council tax on my property where she lives.
Does she have to pay council tax for both properties? If so, can she get a single persons discount on both?

Are there any implications for me? other than paying council tax on new home?
Was a 40 a day smoker for 20 years.
Decided to give up, and haven't had a fag for 12 years.
Halfway through losing six stone.

Looking forward to early retirement.

So, you each own the property that the other one lives in.

We're moving out of Mums place and buying another property, which will hopefully be our home for the next ten years or so.

The house you move out of will be unoccupied and as your mother is the owner she will become liable for the council tax. It will be furnished so she will be liable to pay whatever charge the local council have for a furnished second home.

A Single Person Discount can only be claimed on the property which is your 'sole or main residence' so your mum can only claim a single person discount on her main home.

You become liable for the council tax from when you buy the property. If your still living in the house you rent from your mum you will be paying the council tax on that property as your main residence until you move out of the property.

If your new property is unfurnished and unoccupied then you can claim a Class C exemption for 6 months (a Class A exemption for renovations may be appliable depending on the work being done but the Class C exemption will be easier to claim if its going to only be empty for a few months before you move in).
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Sounds like the scenario in the TV series "Bread", where both the Boswell family and granddad claimed housing benefit. Obviously I'm not accusing OP of this.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Yeah, i rember that they each lived in each others homes and claimed housing benefits and such.....Although i bet loads of people still do it!

No, we are working and not claiming any benfits, apart from the single person tax one.
