Can I move wifes debt onto my credit card???

Hi
Wife has £3600 debt on credit card and the 0% deal will expire soon and want to move to 0% balance transfer card. Unfortunatley she keeps getting refused.
Now what I want to know is if I get one in my name can I move her £3600 onto my card? I have heard different opinions on this. One credit card company said no and some of my friends said you can do it.
Please give me some advice. Does anyone know of a cheap way to move the debt to pay less interest thanks

I would just phone and say you want to do a balance transfer as they don't normally ask whose debt it is.

I've never has an issue doing this although I always do it online. It only normally asks for the card number and card provider.

I've done this. I moved some of my oh's cc debt onto a 0% card in my name.

I had no problems getting accepted and doing a balance transfer, they weren't really bothered that it was from someone else's card!

One point, which i'm sure you're already aware of and considered, is that you are making the debt your own, i.e. if you can no longer repay it then the company concerned will chase you, not your mrs and the credit record affected is yours, not hers. Not a problem if your happily married and settled (there are no problems) but it is something to bear in mind.

It's great that you want to reduce it...my advise is doing 0% and paying off as much as you can (more then the minimum) or is like us, you have another high rate card, chuck all the extra money at the higher rate one.

    best of luck

  • Hi adamcolly.

If there were a FAQ here this would be one of the questions. Yes it can be done; husbands/wives/sons/daughters/friends can all do it. Just don't volunteer the information to the call-centre or the operator may take a dislike to the idea and say no. Try to do it online and you should be fine.

  • To OP - yes it can be done but then it becomes your debt not hers - there is no going back once it has been processed.
  • thanks everyone for your help! I will do it online thanks :j

    Yep true.

It is, however, technically possible to enter into a personal contract. Ie so the wife owes the husband and the husband owes the CC company. This would allow the husband to sue the wife, or have the debt considered as part of a divorce settlement.

I just mention this by way of completeness having seen threads in the past on this subject. It is probably more applicable to arrangements between friends or for larger amounts.

It would be best done in writing and by a lawyer or someone who has legal knowledge of these things. In the case of family relationships there is a general presumption against there being an intention to form a legally binding contract, so this has to be overcome. (Ie simply turning up in court later and proving that you lent the money and saying that he/she promised to return it - perhaps with an IOU won't normally be enough.)
