You should be able to do it by installing Apache - but to to run a forum, the mac would have to be on all the time, and would have all the security issues etc. Depends what you are trying to achieve, but you may be better just taking out a hosting package.

Yes the Mac can run Apache its the package you want for this is MAMP (Mac, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and you might need a dynamic DNS such as DynDNS, and as other posters have said impractical to use as the mac has to be on constantly, the bandwidth might jump and turn everyones access to the internet into a slow crawl.

You would use MAMP to test things before uploading to a remote server.

I fear the OP will be confused by the tech gobbledygook and merely wants to set up a website and forum using a free / cheap host. Which you obviously can do on any computer.

Come on, she doesn't know if a Mac can host a site, she's hardly going to be messing around with Apache, MySQL, PHP, DNS and MAMP

    Uh?

If you look above you will see it is the answer to the question. I interpreted, you just read the words.

Apache, MySQL, PHP, DNS and MAMP all mean NOTHING to 99% of the people on MSE.

Sorry you feel butthurt that a Mac owner got the answer. Weird.
