New driver Insurance (17y/o)

I passed my driving test today, and am looking to buy a car. I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips about which car to buy. Obviusly my main concern is the insurance premium, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here.

What are good cars for cheap insurance (for males that is - i.e. no micras lol)

Are there any insurance companies out there known to have good cheap insurance premiums.

I'd really appreciate any help.

Cheers guys & girls!

Anything low power, 1.0, 1.1. A fiesta or something similar.

If I were you, I'd look at on autotrader, find one, then do a quote (as most pictures leave the licence plate on I think).

I have tried a VW gold and cheapest was about 4 grand but it was a 2006 model! lol using autotrader registration plate.

I'd like something with 4 doors and a fiesta is therefore out of the windows.

My dad was saying an Audi a1/A3 but the insurance will surely be expensive on that?

Also, how much can PASS PLUS actually help? Any experiences with Pass Plus course anyone?

I was thinking a corsa, ford focus, etc.

Also, I dont knw about all this third-party insurance, or getting the car registered in parents name and being insured as a named driver, etc.

Focus HA. No chance. I'm 22 (and had licence since 17, so 5 years now) and a Focus would cost me £1k+ on insurance.
    Audi A3. No chance.

    Corsa yes, if it's a 1.1.

VWs will be expensive as they are "boy racer" cars, Corsas have a similar but not as much.

When I did Pass Plus DirectLine sent me a cheque for £150, so not that much, but this was 4 years ago now.

Which is called 'fronting' and is illegal, if you are the main driver it must be insured in your name, if you had an accident and the insurance company find out you have been fronting the insurance may become invalid which will leave you open to any claims for damages of injuries to third parties.

Unless you live out in the sticks you are not going to get cheap car insurance and even then cheap is likely to be c2k+. It depends on postcode, gender, etc. There are loads of threads on here about insurance for 17 year olds. Suggest you go on one of the price comparison sites after getting vehicle groups off Parkers and then see how you get on using different vehicles for quote purposes.

Remember that there will not be very much difference between third party and fully comp prices, because the major exposure to insurers is the injuries caused in cases where you hurt somebody else. It will help if you have an older female driver on your policy.

    they do 4 door fiesta's or should I say 5 door fiesta's

as a 17 yr old male expect to pay at least £2000 if not more

depends on wher you live and what car

don't laugh at a micra it may be your only hope

forget peugeot 206 , corsa ,fiesta , the usual boy racer type of car unless you have plenty of money

my daughter is 17 and learning , we pay £1000 as a learner on a fiesta 1.25 and expect to pay extra 6-700 when she passes test
  • Try and quote as many different cars to see what works out cheaper. I know that's just common sense, but they really vary. For example I just sold a Y reg saxo vtr (so typical boyracer!) worth like £1200, but it's cheaper to insure my brand new twingo despite it being worth 5 times that! My car before that which was a P reg clio was also more expensive despite having the same no claims!

From my experience I'd say try and avoid those typical first car types and quote before you buy anything.

Dont diss the micra. your best bet might be to look at sub 1.0 micras, dawoo matiz, corsa etc. My sons insurance was £2500 tptf on a 1.0 micra, he got it down to £1200 with elephant by putting his mum and me down as named drivers.
  • The best tip you can have is buy a car based on its safety rating and spend as much as you can afford. As a new driver you will more than likely crash, better to be safe! Insurance companies prefer more expensive cars than cheapo's,£1500 plus only for the fact you are more likely to take care of it.Fiesta 1.25 are a great little car and low insurance rating.good luck

when my daughter was a learner the insurance was £650 with me as a named driver, when she passed her test the policy went up to £1200. the insurance company said that as she would be in the car on her own she was more of a risk.
when she gets insurance make sure she adds you (assuming you drive) as this will bring the price down
