RBS Credit Card PPI

NORBIT
Hi, new to here but need some advice please. I have known for a while that my husband had PPI Insurance on a credit card which, believe it or not, he orginally opened in 1988! Back then it was known as an RBS ACCESS credit card and has since evolved into a WORLDWIDE credit card but the PPI transferred also until we cancelled it in 2006 due to the fact that it was just too expensive but it's still the same card he started way back then.
Now, here's the story...I never thought for one minute that he potentially had been missold this. My husband has been self employed since he left school many many years ago, all our banking afairs were with the RBS incl his company's so you kind of think that anything they arranged for you had to be in your best interests - right?
A friend happened to mention this site and after reading many of your eye-opening stories we have only just realised that he surely was missold this as he would have had limited cover with his self-employed status but also, he would have been able to cover any repayments as he was part of a financial stable business at that time ( and the in-house branch manager at that time would have known that!)
Anyhow, I've sent off a claim thank's to the simple download forms on this site and I've had the norm response of; we're dealing with it bla bla - it's been well over 8 weeks and still no reponse.
However, I also sent off a subject access request and received it back today. Low and behold, they don't have a copy of the original application and they've only sent me the last 6 years worth of statements. It does show that we paid some £400+ in PPI premiums up until we cancelled it in 2006 (as it was just too damn expensive) but here's the thing - are they likely to offer, if anything, only the last 6 years premiums? I know for a fact that we must have paid £000's from the account opening date until we cancelled it and we're going to be major ticked off if they can get away with that:mad: especially in the light of this week's fat cat bonus payments we've been hearing of in the news!
Sorry to blabber on but just want some thoughts on the subject - also, I think I'm going to give the bank another couple of weeks to see what they come back with then I'm heading off to the Ombudsman.

Firms are only required to hold onto data for 6 years. It seems by what you have said that the card was opened 22 years ago? That might be why you will have difficulty getting the original agreement. Unless you can supply evidence of what happened prior to the statements they have sent you, you may not be able to prove how much you paid.
I would suggest you call them to find out why it is held up, as they may have sent some kind of response, but you haven't recieved it. Why do you feel it was missold originally?Best Regards

I believe it was missold originally as he would not have been fully covered due to his self-employed status or any claim would have been limited under it but moreso because all our paperwork was dealt with by an in-house branch manager who overseen all of our affairs incl that of his company; he would have been well aware that he would have been substantially covered due to sickness/illness etc and would also have been more the capable of covering the repayments should the need have arisen.0

The thing is, the 'self employed' arguement may not work here. It very much depends on the terms of the insurance cover. I am aware that recent PPIs for RBS do cover people who are self employed for sickness and involuntary unemployment. Regarding the branch manager knowing you had substantial cover, this is going to be very difficult for you to substantiate with evidence.
If you feel it was missold write to them with your complaint and state the card was opened in 1988. I would say though, don't expect any more than what's on those statements if they do uphold your complaint.Best Regards
