Hi, I wonder if you could help please?

All my mp3 files on my Pc have suddenly decided to become mpeg 4 audio files! Any idea how to get them back?!

I'll have a guess: you're running a version of Windows, and something (possibly a media player that you have installed) has changed the file association for a file with a name that ends with .mp3 so that it is opened by an MPEG 4 media player?

If you unhide known file extensions, do the filenames still end with .mp3?

Hi, I think thats exactly whats happened, they were all fine before, cant remember what I installed. Possibly quicktime.

I've got myself a convertor but of course it only does one at a time and will taken em days to do all my music. Was just wondering if there was an easy way to do all at once!

Do you need to convert MP4 audio to MP3?

This has batch conversion, though have not used it

    http://www.maniactools.com/soft/m4a-to-mp3-converter/

Does the one you have, have a file - import option, which allows you to higlight all files in a folder

Audacity has m4a to Mp3 conversion

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features
  • Select one of the files that thinks it is "mp4 video" right click on it and select "open with" then find your normal mp3 player program and select always open this type with this program and that should sort it. Mind you it depends on windows version for my suggestion.
I doubt that the rogue program has converted any of your MP3s to MP4s, basically it has set itself to open them that's all. Let someone know which version of Windows you have.

Don't convert anything. It's a file extension thing, likely because Quicktime or another player has associated itself with the .mp3 file extension. The files haven't changed, only what they are called by Quicktime, or whatever it was. (I dislike quicktime personally, it often breaks video editing software when itunes force-upgrades it). If you want it back how it was, associate the extension with Windows Media Player.

For those who don't know, MP3 is MPEG layer 3 (audio) encoding. So "MPEG Audio" is an entirely accurate label.
