EMA counted as an income?!

Hi All

I am a single parent working 21.5 hours a week. I get Tax Credits and £20 per week Housing Benefit.

My son left school last year and started an apprenticeship on 13th September paying £100 per week from 5th November, between these dates he received EMA.

Housing Benefit have counted this as an income because I wasn't receiving Child Benefit for him. Now I know that CB is the 'passport' benefit but surely it's not logical to award HB to someone that receives Child Benefit and EMA but not to someone that only receives EMA??

EMA is awarded to those with a low household income so he qualified for it but now I'm told because he received that I couldn't receive HB for him.

So basically, the more you get the more you get?!

My other concern is that the apprenticeship finishes next month now obviously he's looking for work but it's not that easy is it. So if it takes a few months for him to get a job, where is the money coming from for him to live on??

    Thanks for the reply.

No the EMA was at the same place he's at now but there was a probationary period. The CB stopped even though he was getting EMA because they said he didn't qualify. I'm confused to be honest, I've just been looking on the apprenticeship website and it is through LSC, so it is somehow funded through the government?

I need to get advice I think.
