How to convince my parents to leave RCI timeshare

My parents bought into an RCI timeshare scheme a few years ago, it costs thousands and now they have to pay £400 every year in "maintanance" fees. I asked what these fees were really for and they couldn't really say.

They also don't seem to be able to say whether or not it saves them any money, but as you still have to pay for your flights then I'm not thinking it's very good value for money. All the resorts are all miles from anywhere too so you always have to hire a car, you can't book last minute and there's a limited number of places you can stay at.

It also causes a lot of auguments between them as they can never decide which resort to stay at, and then most of the time it's totally booked up and there's no other resorts in teh city they want to go to.

I book my holidays using something like expedia, which is much simpler, offers huge benfits like paying a lot less and much more choice.

How can I convinve them of their mistake without them blowing up (they get very defensive if you suggest they've made a bad choice).

  • My parents have a similar thing, we have some friends who have one too although when they tell you about it, if you say "oh its like a timeshare then" they will jump down your throat and tell you "its definately not a timeshare".... :D

Both my parents and our friends both seem to think its value for money so we just let them get on with it. I think that might be the best option if they are happy with it and I assume they must be overall (despite the arguments) or else they would have got rid themselves.

I do worry for my parents when they come to get rid of the timeshare... I imagine they are very difficult to get out of but I don't know as I have never seen the contract. Nothing I can do anyway so let them get on with it.

If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.

it's mainly that they argue so much when places aren't available and I know I could just go online and book somewhere there for a holiday myself but they're tied into only being able to pick places from their catalogue.

  • Hi, I'm trying to help my sister in the states get out of her's. I've just had a conversation with her about it and he thinks it drains too much money. How can she sell it please?
