Hi All, please help!

I have an HP Officejet 5610 connected to PC running XP which is in turn wirelessly connected to network. My laptop is Windows 7 and i have had issues printing before, down to W7 and XP not liking each other or something!

Anyway i reinstalled printer (network) on me laptop and the test page printed fine but i cannot print anything else. When i print it seems to start or attempt to print as the cartridges move and there is some noise but then it just doesn't print and there is no error message and no docs to print in Devices and Printers.

Still prints fine from PC directly connected.

Any help would be very gratefully received, thanks.

More than likely a problem with network itself. Windows 7, xp or vista do not "like" one another at all.
Have asked a so called expert about this before and he said "they are not incompatible" with a silly smirk on his face. didnt say they where compatible without a load of running backwards and forwards, though.
Have you managed to browse folders on remote pcs ? Both ways, A to B, B to A ?
When you installed printer on networked computer, did it ask to download additional drivers from the other pc ?
Sorry think I mis-understood your post

So you re-installed the printer over the network and the test page printed ?

Yes I went into add printer on W7 and it installed and printed the tesp page.

Yes docs etc can be viewed over the network from the laptop that are on the PC.

As there is no driver specifically for W7 for the 5610 can anyone please advise which would be best to use? I saw on the printer properties on the PC that you male additional drivers available for other computers using the printer over the network. Might this help?

On the HP website, they are offering a windows 7 driver for the 5610:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=al-75052-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=4062&product=441125&sw_lang=

Having said that, HP should be ashamed of themselves, 363MB of bloatware to download just to install a driver. Yuck. Make sure you deselect all the options except the driver when installing.

EDIT: If you go to Windows Update, it often will provide the printer driver, without all the bloatware, especially for more common models like the HP

Thanks poppy10, how do i update the specific driver using the Windows update? If so i assume that this would be the driver that was used when i re-installed it, not sure as it did it automatically!
  • Hi PJB
Sorry its taken so long to reply, got me stumped to be honest
Was going to say the same as poppy10
Was also going to suggest you go to HP home try their interactive support tool, but the options they have for the network troubleshooting don't match up to your set up.
They do have a diag download here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&lang=en&softwareitem=mp-88699-1

I would make the additional files available as well. But the initial install should have asked if you wanted to download them and then warned if they were not available.

  • Might be totally wrong but windows update doesn't search for printer updates. It searches for items that are in devices. That is has drivers within device manager. Printers do not. If you open printers and devices in control panel. They are both separate. Windows will search those devices for updates

Think poppy10 means you should go to windows update website and search for new driver in catalogue

    Thanks sunlund2311.

Do you think it would help if update the driver on the PC to the W7 one, even though it is XP?
  • No, not straight away anyway. See how it goes just updating win 7 driver. Win xp would probably not accept it. I don't think I saw xp in the driver list.
