Child tax credits help please s/e earnings

Hi guys,
I gave birth to my son 4 months ago and applied for child allowance. I then went to apply for tax credits but they need my hubby's income details. All ok I thought but it turns out that he thought (naive I know!) that his business partner was keeping proper books (as he is a trained accountant) and submitting them every year (both reg self employed running sandwich vans). ANyway turns out that business partner is useless and hasnt kept the books properly over 3 years. Hubby has rough details on what he has taken but business partner has all the reciepts (somewhere!) Anyway, how do we go about submitting his books? Can I send off the tax credits form and then wait for them to contact me about his earnings?
I am really annoyed at hubby for letting it get this far and the longer it goes the longer we lose out on getting some benefits to help until I get back to work.
ANyway I hope you can help me

So he hasn't paid any tax or national insurance for 3 years? if so, then I think he needs to get himself a proper accountant/tax adviser who can help sort that part of it out and give you an income figure to use for tax credits.
If you use an income figure that doesn't match with what HMRC hold for tax purposes, you may find yourself subject to a tax credit compliance check.
I would get your husband to get professional advice and sort this out asap.

If he is a trained accountant he should be fully aware of the potential of keeping no records!Be happy, it's the greatest wealth

Cheers for the replies,
I dont believe that his business partner was ever an accountant now. I have been asking hubby to get the business books since baby was born and his business partner has been delaying ever since. Even yesterday he said he still had to print some spreadsheets out yet he wants hubby to borrow money to buy him out!! He has all the reciepts (the business partner) so hubby has nothing to prove his outgoings.
I am so !!!!!! off with both of them. Hubby was still defending him until recently saying BP wouldnt do something like not have the books done. I want to give hubby a real reality check. I have said he could get into real trouble over this and needs to get it sorted. AAARRRRGGHHHHH
Is anyone able to tell me what could happen to hubby about this? I dont know what to do as just want to cry, I'm having to lie to my parents over it all as to why our tax credits have not come through and to top it off we share my sisters house and now with baby its a bit crowded (2 bed house - although she is only here for half the month) so am trying to apply for a council house (rent would be about the same) yet they also need his accounts before they can process a claim - so I'm having to make excuses about that as well.
I'm so annoyed that hubby has been seeing it all through rose tinted glasses. I dont give a damn about his business partner as I am sure he has been stealing from the business anyway and will move away soon.
Sorry for the rant.😁0 -
I'm pretty sure you can give an estimate on the tax credits form - isn't there a box to tick saying the income is an estimate? Not sure when you need to provide final details by.0

Cheers guys for helping me out on this. I got hubby to face up to things and he contacted the tax man through an accountant. He was able to show roughly what he would have earned (well his side of the business anyway!) I also got him to own up to our parents which he did and the accountant gave us an amount of tax to pay as well as national insurance - which we have been paying monthly. Because he had done some paid texed bar work he had paid some national insurance etc. Anyway to cut a long story short..... hubby is still grovelling and after talking it all through with the tax credits people we have now filled in a form and are waiting to be assessed. Ihave to admit it nearly broke our marriage with the lies and hubby now has nothing to do with his former business partner. But I do know he is dodgy as overheard him say he has no tax on his vehicle so me being a nosey and annoyed wife i checked him out on the dvla website and would you believe it .................he has not had tax on his vehicle for a few years!!!! :argh:, but nobody seems to want to know. Anyway thanks all for helping xx😁0
