Windows 7 running really slow

Hi there. I have windows 7 (64) installed on my pc and for some reason is is running very slowly.

It has been fine so far, but suddenly it seems to be running very slow.

ie, before, on clicking the login icon on startup, it use to take about 3 seconds to log me in and i could click on the explorer icon and that would be open in about 2.... essentially that meant that from clicking my login icon, I could be browsing within 10 seconds.

Now it seems, when I click my login icon, my mouse pointer disappears and it takes about a minute to login. Then on pushing a browser button, nothing happens for another 20 seconds.

This problem is not however just on start-up. it seems every-time I click on something there seems to be a delay in starting it up, and If i switch profile and try to work with 2 profiles open, the machine practically grinds to a halt.

My machine is a quad core spec machine with 4 GB of RAM which is only used for basic office tasks.

Strangely when I check my processes, CPU is never above 18% (usually 5-10) and only 1.5 -1.8 gb of ram is used. Also, my hard drive is not labouring at all so I am stuck as to what the bottleneck is on my system.

I appreciate any help you can offer.. and please no "i told you so should have installed linux" :-P

  • I have undertaken a system reestore, removed avast and reverted back to avg and the system sees to be running a lot faster.

Startup time is now about 55 seconds from clicking on login password (was 30 before avg was installed). the slowness seems to be when you click on your profile it stays on the blue welcome screen. Once windows appears, that seems to be quite quick.

If anyone as any other tips they woudl be appreciated.

Did you use the AVG removal tool before installing Avast?
