Lost files on Liteon DVD HDD

I have a Liteon HDD/DVD LVW-5045 recorder. Today all the thumbnails on previously recorded video are all blank and the machine will not play them. It crashes and has to be turned on again. I have done a defrag but no joy. I recorded a few minutes of tv today and this is ok but while recording the display says it has 99hrs record time left so the 40 odd hrs of stuff that was on the HDD looks like it has vanished even though the file names and times are still displayed on the browser. Any ideas how I have lost all this and is there any way of getting it back?

I have experienced this exact same problem with not one but two Yamada 9000H machines. They were returned to Maplin (fantastic Customer Service) and I was told the recordings were not recoverable.
I have now owned 10 DVD recorders by Mico, Yamada, Phillips, Chilli and had faults with them all.

It seems to me that reliability is a major problem with this technology. Or maybe I'm just a lightning conductor!
