Which frequent flyer club to join - Air New Zealand or Virgin

My boyfriend and I returned from a round the world trip booked with Virgin / Air New Zealand / Singapore Airlines in July. I've just found out that I can claim points retrospectively (I have no idea why I didn't join a frequent flyer club when we booked the ticket!)

RTW ticket booked in June 2009.

Our last flight on RTW ticket was in July 2010 (the only one within 6 months so potentially the only one I can get miles for) and was with Virgin (MIA to LHR).

We are emigrating to New Zealand so will be accruing many points coming back to the UK every year.

Does anyone have any experience of this or reccommendations?

if you can only claim for mia-lhr then what about using virgin flying club as you can get miles for air new zealand flights as they are a partner airline of VS.

it probably works with air new zealand flights the same just not sure if you could join and still claim for the virgin flights already had??
