Portable Memory?

OK - in big easy words please, lol - I have little, to no, understanding of this sort of hardware :o

We have a PC, and are soon to get a laptop. We want a way to transfer files (not software) from one to the other.

It also needs to be a form of memory to hold backups from the laptop.

Originally we thought to just burn the files to a CDRW, but seeing as the disc drive on the PC isn't always reliable, we thought maybe some USB portable memory would be a better idea.

What's the best make/type to go for? What sort of capacity would be best? (we'll be talking some pretty major files - word documents running to the 1000s of pages, large excel files etc)

Help :confused::o

are you on broadband, if so a wireless router might be a good idea. so you can use both PC's on the internet, and transfer files between the two.

    Yes, we are on Broadband.

What does the router do - I've heard the term, but don't know what they are.

Actually - that was going to probably be another question at some point - how to get the laptop connected to the broadband.

are you on cable or bt phone?

A router shares the connection, so you can use more than one PC on the internet at once, and if you get a wireless laptop, you can wander about and surf in the garden etc..

It also gives you extra protection from hackers, and connects the two or more pc's together, so you can transfer files..

If you're planning to use a USB stick / pen drive for back-up storage then pay a bit more & go for a reliable brand - personally I'd choose Kingston - I've had 2 bargain brand drives suddenly just stop being recognised.

    Thank you [STRIKE]both[/STRIKE] all :)

I will take some time to read and digest the links you posted Albertross :)

And Chuckles, that 'book' looks ideal - would be able to back up a heck of a lot from both PC and laptop onto there.

I have one myself, cant recommend it enough.

Western Digital = 3 yr warranty (not that you'll need it, they're rock solid) and as you say, you can backup everything on a daily basis if you need to.

I've just bought a kingston pen drive for my DS for xmas.
1GB for £15 delivered from pricestorm.
Very useful for taking all his homework files to school to upload as he can print them out there using their laser printers. He's been using his 128mb mp3 player to do this up till now but its a bit limiting .
